What is wrong with Indian Education System ?

Today I'm little bit bored and tired bcoz of tooooo much School work, Unit tests,  DPPs, Practicals, Assessments etc.  "Bacche ki Jaan lelo🤒"

So let's get started...

Let me tell you some of my experiences...

Once I was unable to solve a mathematics problem in class 9 and instead of clearing the doubts to me, the teacher commented that “solving maths is not a duffer's cup of tea”. Wth🤐

When the exam results were declared, I got 97 in maths which was the highest in my class😂

Once during chemistry class, I asked my teacher why the colour of Copper Sulphate is blue?

He made me stand outside the class as according to him the question was “illogical”.

My physics teacher of class 10 taught a cheap level physics to us which was more like a literature class as he explained just the definitions to us. No numericals at all.

When my father complained this to the principal, it offended him and he took that on his “Burj Khalifa” sized ego.

Afterwards, every single day he used to taunt me and boasted upon me for this.

Now, let's flip it. Lets assume that I've asked these questions from a teacher of a different country.

When I was unable to solve the maths problem, she would have assisted me to solve that and I would have given the credit to her for scoring the highest.

When I questioned the colour of Copper Sulphate, My chemistry teacher would have given a proper explanation and lab-methods to clarify my doubts.

When my father complained about the low level physics, the teacher Would have definitely raised his level of teaching.

These are only a few incidents from my school life which forced me to conclude that the students who only mug up things are the teacher's favourite pet, the ones who question things are instantly given the tag of being disrespectful towards the teachers.(No offence to anyone)

You can't deny the fact that Indian education system is a very biased ones favouring just a “few” students and polishing them.

Let's take a dig at our education background.

The reality behind the education system is extracted from the 18th century which has deep remarks showing that India was almost 100% literate before the Britishers came to India.

Now in India everyone is running for the same purpose that is for grabbing marks, not for the knowledge and it is quite interesting that how it is possible to judge anybody’s knowledge in 3 hours of examination??

We do not appreciate anyone to try the different field. We are itself running on the same path which had made us physically free from British rule but we are still mentally a slave to this European culture.

There are myriad things wrong with the current state of education in India, both in terms of values (of competition) and skills (ability to clear exams) that are unfortunately celebrated and imparted. The content of education is deeply questionable.

The education system in India is worsening because of intrinsic reasons.

  • Our present system only relies on the score rather than knowledge.
  • There is no scope for students to do an experiment on their own, but in the end, they are going to colleges or universities and having the bookish knowledge doesn’t map them to the real world.
  • They are engaged with the courses with their parent choice; even they don’t bother or try to know the courses available with career options.
  • Some schools are giving marks based on papers rather than the actual content, and students are unable to cope up with too much pressure which laid them to fill up papers instead of focusing on contents.

Teach a player how to play a game in theory with all the rules, take a written exam of game, technical things and rules. Based on marks you rate the players.

Now the player knows the game in and out, but can he/she really play the game? If not, then what is lacking, what is stopping the top scorer in written exam to play the excellent game?

This is exactly what is wrong with education, not in India but all over world. Though other countries are now moving towards practical knowledge, but India is not coping up on that front.

Solution: Focus on practical knowledge. Demonstrate the principle, law or experiment. Criteria should not be marks obtained in written exams but a performance in practical exams. It’s easy to forget what you read, but it’s almost impossible to forget what you see.

For inspiration look at how Prof. Walter Lewin demonstrates the laws and principles of Physics.

•To award marks, not to test knowledge:-

Exams are overrated in India. Unit tests, boards exams, semester exams, PMT, AIEEE, JEE, SAT, GATE and what not.

A student is always giving some or the other exam, and almost all of them are subjective exams, except competitive ones. In India answering the questions during exams has become essay writing competition, where marks are mostly given based on how many pages are filled by the student.

Taking a subjective written examination doesn’t justify or fulfil the purpose of examination at all.

Because when the teachers are checking the answers, they can’t read each and every line, and they just glance over the answer sheet, look at the how big or small the answer is, and based on his/her feeling they would give marks. It always happens that a good worded short answer would get less marks than a crappy, crammed & long answer.

Many times teacher would simply say the answer is wrong just because it is not similar to what the teacher has dictated during his/her lecture in class.

Problem: Types of questions asked. Most of the questions are like “what is xyz? Explain”

Instead of asking “How the principle of xyz can be utilised to make abc using pqr and ijk.” or “make a design of abc which should have some listed features”. Now let student think what principle or laws he/she has to apply and how. It will be highly conceptual, for which understanding of concept is required and not mugging it.

Solution: Instead of asking what, ask how and why in an indirect way. Ask practical questions instead of asking to spit out the mugged up words. Put the students mind at work and force them to think on the problem. In short, please ask a solution to a problem, rather than answer to a question.

•Problem: Questions in objective exams are prone to guessing, and can’t really test knowledge.

Solution: I believe objective exam is the best way to test one’s knowledge, because the person can actually work on solving the problem at hand, rather than figuring out how to write that answer in beautiful various colour pens and stencils to please the eye of answer sheet checker, and simply wasting precious time.

And who said objective questions can have only 4 options as answer, who is stopping from putting 10 or 15 options for each problem. This would also reduce the probability of guessing a correct solution. Of-course putting 15 options for each problem would take a lot of space, and more pages to print the question paper, but still this exam pattern would save million times more papers by not allowing the students to write essays and fill supplementary sheets with non necessary details.

Objective examination patter would solve some other problems as well like:

  • Restricting knowledge by reading Guide books.
  • Cheating mafia. Passing chits of answers from windows is easy when questions are like “what is xyz?”, but when questions are practical based problems which require logic, then by the time cheating mafia would solve the paper (if they are capable of solving at all), the exam time would already be over, and only honest learned students will sail through easily.

Regulated Coaching Centers: Breeding IITians and doctors starting from 6th class.

I have seen in news papers many ads from various coaching institute where they claim to have designed a sic year curriculum for a 6th class students, so that the students can clear the IIT or PMT exam after class 12. What the rubbish hell is this, pushing a 6th class student for IIT coaching. I feel pity on those who take admissions in such coaching centres, and feel even more pity on those parents who are making their child’s life almost as hell.

Middle school level is very important for a child. That’s where they have free mind and learn subjects without any biasness. Unbiased study will help those students in future to know what they really like to study and what would they opt as their profession.

This sense of competitiveness and forceful study from so young age is not less than a child abuse. Mental abuse is worst than physical abuse.

Solution: Parents should not force their child to run in a rat race. Observe them, love them, understand them, talk to them. Find out their interest, and take interest in their interest. All they need is some wisdom and guidance, not a track for rat race. On the other hand, Govt. should put a regulatory authority and guidelines for such coaching centres.

•Overrating Grades or Marks obtained: Look at Sharma’s son, he’s got more marks than you.

Any students who are reading this answer, trust me your marks of 10th, or 12th or bachelors degree does not matter at all.

To dear parents -

  • Please do not overrate marks obtained by your students.
  • Please do not put the weight of your proud on their shoulder.
  • Please do not compare or flaunt your child’s marks/grades in public or private.
  • Please do not crumple upon your expectations, and force your child to do suicide or run away from you.
  • Please respect your child’s ambition, interest and self respect. Do not humiliate them in front of others over marks and grades

Remember that Steve Jobs, James Cameroon, Bill Gates, Tiger Woods, Abraham Lincoln, Jim Carrey, John Lennon, Ted Turner, Varun Shoor, Mahesh Murthy, Kunal Shah, Bhavin Turakhia and millions of other successful people are those who do not possess any mark sheet or grade sheet.

Solution: Change in grading system.
